Just last year, Apple announced that there are now more than 1,000,000 apps in their store. Since that announcement, I’m sure the number has risen even higher.

With 1,000,000 apps, how in the world are you supposed to pick just a small handful to actually download and use?

We’ve put together a list (that doesn’t include the basics like Facebook and Instagram) of apps that we find useful, fun, and simply stunning. Check it out:

Day One
Journaling isn’t for everyone, but who doesn’t like recording special moments to remember more clearly in the future? With Day One, you can link pictures to your posts as well as automatically tag them with a time and location, creating a perfect travel journal. Day One was also voted the 2012 Mac App of the year. Not bad, not bad at all. Price – $4.99

Duolingo
This is one of those apps that seems too good to be true. First, it’s free. Second, it can help you learn 5 languages. This is a must-have app for anyone who travels or is interested in cross-cultural ministry or mission trips. This app can become addictive, as it uses games to help users learn a language. To top it off, Apple recently named it their 2013 app of the year. Price – FREE

Afterlight
This app makes Instagram’s photo editing look amateur. Their collection of filters, borders, and textures allow you to edit a simple iPhone picture to near perfection. Oh, and once you’re done, you can simply click and upload it to any social media account to share with your followers. Price – $.99

Venmo
So a group of friends gets together and orders pizza; the only issue is that some of the friends don’t have any cash on them. This app makes it easy to pay anyone back when you’re low on cash. Simply connect your account and you can make transactions without any processing fees. You no longer have to fear the phrase, “Can I just pay you back?”  Price – FREE

Lift
You know all of those habits you wish you had but never got around to developing? Lift is one of the best apps out there to help you develop habits by prompting you and tracking your progress.  It also has a feature that allows friends to encourage each other as they pursue new habits. So whether you want to work out more or call your mom more, this app will come in handy. Price – FREE

Loom
This app makes it easy to sync all of your videos and pictures between devices and upload them to the Web automatically. So now, instead of videos and pictures taking up all of your phone’s memory, you can keep your memories in an online library for easy access. Price – FREE

Sunrise
Keeping a calendar used to be so easy. That was before you had a work calendar, personal calendar, Facebook calendar, and Linkedin Events to keep up with. Sunrise is the calendar app that puts all that information into one place. Sound kind of boring? Well, it also lets you map a location of your meeting with a simple click and also wish someone a Happy Birthday on Facebook. Any detail-oriented person will love this app. Price – FREE
