What an Atheist Can Teach Us About Evangelism

You are probably familiar with Penn Gillete. He is the big guy in the Vegas act Penn & Teller and was recently a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. What you may not know about Penn is that he is an outspoken atheist. His license plates read “atheist”, “nogod”, and “godless”. He applied for “infidel” but the DMV wouldn’t give it to him (story here). Maybe that’s what’s happening at the DMV while you wait for three hours – they’re sifting through all sorts of strange vanity plate applications.

So what can Penn teach us about evangelism? Plenty.

Penn says, “I’ve always said I don’t respect people who don’t proselytize. I don’t respect that at all… How much do you have to hate somebody to not proselytize; how much do you have to hate somebody to believe that everlasting life is possible and not tell them that…?”

Wow, these are really challenging words from a guy that doesn’t believe.
